Resources

The department consists of two classrooms including a store cupboard. Classrooms are equipped with IWBs and traditional WBs; staff are equipped with laptops. The department has class sets of Board-approved textbooks and a library of textbooks and AV resources.

 Psychology

Curriculum

Students have opportunities to develop a wide understanding of Psychology including Social Psychology; Cognitive Psychology; the Biological, Learning and Psychodynamic Approaches; Clinical Psychology and Applied Psychology (Criminology and Child Psychology).

Key Stage 5

Students follow Edexcel Syllabus; in A2 the options for Criminological Psychology and Child Psychology are taught in Unit 3.

Enrichment

Students carry out their own practical research, content analyses and conceptual research. They make intensive use of the FROG to compile wikis and pursue wider reading.

 Sociology

Curriculum

Learning is acquired though a mix of interactive lessons which involve presentations, group work, one-to-one mentoring and independent projects. Students develop a wide range of academic and vocational skills such as: written communication, verbal communication, personal organisation, meta-learning, creativity, critical evaluation and teamwork.

Key Stage 5

Students follow the AQA curriculum. In Year 12 students undertake the Culture and Identity Unit and the Education with Research Methods Unit. In Year 13 students undertake the Beliefs in Society Unit and the Crime and Deviance with Methods Unit.

Enrichment

Students are given opportunities to look into primary sociological research and undertake research projects of their own.
